President Trump on Thursday criticized NATO for declining to participate in the war with Iran, saying it raised questions about whether the U.S. would "be there" for the alliance in the future.

"I'm so disappointed in NATO because this was a test for NATO," he said during a Cabinet meeting. "This was a test: you can help us — you don't have to, but if you don't do that, we're going to remember."

The president described the Iran war as "small time" and questioned whether NATO allies would back up the U.S. if there is ever a "big one."

"They weren't there. So, if there's ever a big one, I don't think they're going to be there. And that's not fair and we have to remember that as a country," he said. "We're always going to be there. At least we were. I don't know anymore, to be honest with you."

NATO countries have largely avoided direct participation in the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, with some arguing it was not their war or that it lacked a clear legal justification.
